6 weeks to go!

Hi all!

We have officially hit 34 weeks! We just realized that if this baby comes when I came, then we would be having a baby in 2 weeks! Of course we hope he stay in a bit longer than that but it is still crazy to think about. Well, are we ready for this little guy? Emotionally I would say yes! We've had over 7 months to be thinking about him, and we can't wait just to hold him and start our lives as our new family. On the other hand, we have nothing ready for the baby! We have some clothes (I couldn't help myself), a crib (that he might not sleep in), and a dresser. That's about it. Well now that my mom is back home (Yay!), we can finish up all the shopping. Also, our baby shower is next weekend, and we can't wait to see everybody. Being able to meet up with friends and family on a regular basis is the main reason we moved back here from Hawaii. We are so happy that we will get to see so many people at least one more time before baby comes.

The weather is starting to cool down here in the valley, and that makes me very happy. My wardrobe may not be ready for the chill but I am! I can't wait for big comfy sweaters and hot pumpkin lattes. Last weekend Alex, Tegan and I headed down to Malibu to watch the sunset. So beautiful! I love Hawaii but I don't think anything beats California beaches. We packed a picnic from Trader Joes including falafel wraps, dark chocolate with sea salt and of course some ice-cold pale ale for Alex. We might try and make a sunset beach trip a Sunday evening tradition! Sounds pretty good, right? Tegan definitely missed her weekly beach trips.

That's it for now! I hope to see some of you guys next weekend!

29 weeks and counting...

Hey All!

26 weeks!
It's been a while since I've made a post, but luckily things are finally starting to settle out around here. I am officially 29 weeks pregnant as of last weekend, so that means baby boy could be here in 11 weeks! Surprisingly, that still feels like pretty far away. Part of me feels like I am ready for him to just be here, and other parts of me haven't really realized that a real baby will be in our lives everyday. :)

27 weeks!
According to my doctors my pregnancy has been amazingly healthy. I haven't had any problem so far, I have gained the normal amount of weight, as as of week 22 baby boy was in the 43rd percentile for weight! The symptoms on the other hand don't feel so healthy! I never fully got over the morning sickness and still get nauseous around the most random things. :( I am getting the craziest veins all down my legs, I wake up 7 times a night to pee, I get lightheaded and dizzy very easily, the list goes on....but as long as he's healthy it's all worth it! He is also kicking up a storm especially at night. The feeling sometimes gets very surreal. I can now feel him move around in there rather than just kick. I think he likes to play tricks on his daddy though, because he will stop kicking right when I call Alex over to feel him. :) A week ago I was finally able to see my belly move on it's own!

We started our childbirth classes last week and we are very excited about that! We chose to do the Bradley Method. The class focuses on the fact that childbirth is natural and normal and also incorporates the use of a  birth coach which is usually the husband or partner. Alex will be very involved in the birthing process which makes him feel awesome and makes me feel more relaxed. The class is 12 weeks long and we meet for 2 hours a week at our instructor's house. They are a cute couple with 2 kids and another on the way! Last week we learned a bunch of exercises to get my body ready for labor. This week will be all about nutrition!
The hubby and I at the fair!

At the OC Fair for my dad's and Alex's birthdays!
She loves the dog park!
Our little apartment here in Van Nuys finally feels comfortable and homey! I have a bunch of decorating projects that I want to work on, but at least we have all the basics down. Not having a backyard has been difficult, and I am taking Tegan on walks at least 3 times a day! Luckily, we have a couple awesome dog parks nearby and we try to make it to one of them at least twice a week. We have also been trying out a bunch of new eateries around here and we can't wait to share them with friends and family! Gracie and Jon came over for a slumber party last weekend and we tried Blue Dog Tavern for dinner in Sherman Oaks. We had the breakfast inspired Chi Chi burger and it was so good. For breakfast we stopped at Nat's Early Bite a few blocks from our house. They are a little diner with scrumptious fresh baked muffins. I also have to shout out Joes Falafel for the best falafel that I have ever had! We can't wait to find even more yummy places here in the valley.

Thanks for reading and I hope to update more often!

Hello California!

Well we all finally made it back to California! The last week in Hawaii was pretty busy and stressful, but surprisingly everything went off without a hitch. We got everything moved out of our house, dropped our car off to be shipped and I finished my last day of work at Aulani. It is a bit surreal that I won't be going back to work there. I already miss everybody. My co-workers were all amazing. For my last hour of work, they all threw a pizza party for me and we all just "talked story." It made the whole day even harder, but that's how I will always remember my last day.

Also during my last week I went in for our 18 week ultrasound. They did all the measurements and baby looks perfect. Heartbeat was right on track and baby weighed 8 oz. and was about 6 1/2 inches long. Since Alex wasn't there I decided to get the sex in an envelope and open it with him that weekend. During the ultrasound baby had it's head mushed into my uterus so we couldn't get a great face picture but that was ok with me. It was moving its hands up and down the whole time but never moved its head. We got a great picture of baby waving its hands and boy did it have long fingers like it's mom! After the ultrasound I had scheduled a spa day since my dad had got one for me for Mother's Day. The prenatal massage was awesome. They even had this pad so that I could lay flat on my stomach, which I haven't been able to do for at least a week now! After that I went straight in for a facial and since I was so relaxed I think I felt baby move for the first time! It just felt like a muscle spasm so it's hard to tell exactly what it was. :) All in all, we both had a great exciting and relaxing day!

I made it home on a nice easy flight last Saturday morning. Alex met me at the airport and we hit up a yummy Thai place nearby. We ordered our food and before our drinks even came we had to open the envelope! We didn't waste any time. Alex opened the envelope and we found out that the baby is a.....BOY! I totally had the feeling this whole time, although I was saying I wanted a girl. Boys make me a little nervous, but I couldn't be more excited! It feels weird saying that Alex and I are going to have a son, but it feels so normal at the same time. We called around and everybody so excited. Let the shopping begin!

The next day we had a wonderful BBQ put on by my parents. So many people came by to say hi and just hang out. I love being home and just being able to be around all these amazing people! I know that Alex and I can raise a baby by ourselves, but I couldn't imagine baby boy not being around these people. He is going to be loved and spoiled by so many people!

The last piece of interesting news is that Alex got a job that he applied for in LA! He applied for this job when we were still in HI, and it just took this long to get the offer. He starts the job July 1st, so we will be moving to the San Fernando Valley within the next few weeks! I have never been to that area so we have some exploring to do!

That's it for now!

17 weeks and all alone!

Hey all!

So at lot has changed since we last did a blog post. Most of you know what's been going on, but may not know the full story. As many of you know, we have been hoping to be able to move back home before this little baby gets here. As much as we love Hawaii, it is just not home. We don't have the same support system out here and even though my job is great, I don't have a lot of flexibility with taking time off. I gave Alex the daunting task of looking for a job back in California. We had been pretty stressed out about it because we knew after a certain point in the pregnancy, it wouldn't make sense to try and move.

All of our wishing and hoping paid off and Alex got an offer for a job! More details on that to follow. As soon as we made the decision to take it, we were in full blown moving mode.We listed everything on Craigslist, booked our plane tickets and started making arrangements to crash with our parents until we can find our own place. Alex had to start his job in 2 weeks. I decided to stay here in Hawaii at least until Alex started his job and decided that he liked it. So, Alex left a couple weeks ago and this place is pretty much empty. I did not want to be left with anything since I am not supposed to be doing any heavy lifting and it's just a pain. :)

I gave my 2 weeks notice at work a week ago, and I officially fly out on June 8th! I still have a bunch of loose ends to tie up but Alex took care of most of it before he left. My hero! One big step that I took was selling my Scion. :( I bought that car when I was 18 and it's been with me this whole time. We decided to keep the Kia since it's more of a family car, although I don't know if Alex digs the red color. :)

Tegan left with Alex and she is loving being back with other dogs at my parents house. Alex was worried about Tegan forgetting about him with all the other dogs and people around, but he quickly learned that she's a daddy's girl and always will be.

As for me, I am all alone but strangely enjoying the peace and quiet. I am so used to a little dog following me everywhere so it's kinda nice to just do what I want. I was also able to stock the fridge with tasty snacks without worrying if they would still be there when I got home. :) It is a bit of a bummer that Alex isn't here since I feel a lot of changes happening with me this week in terms of the baby. My belly is getting a little bigger and a little harder. My midwife said that I may be feeling a kick any day now! My checkup last week went really well. The baby's heartbeat is still 160 bpm, which many people think that high of a heartbeat means it's a girl?? Well we will see in a  week! I have my ultrasound for June 5th but I am going to try and get the sex in an envelope and open it with Alex when I get home on the 8th. My parents have also planned a BBQ at their house on the 9th, so hopefully we can share the good news to everybody then.

Alright well I just wanted to do a quick update and I can't wait to see all you California people soon and for everybody else, we will at least be on the mainland so road trip!
Tegan about to get taken away for her flight. Not a happy dog.
Me at 16 weeks. I think I see a little bump there!

Baby On The Way

On February 20, we learned that we were going to be parents. And it didn't feel real.

All the evidence we had was an ambiguous pregnancy test. I have always wondered what was wrong with people who took multiple pregnancy tests. I went to school, I know a couple of things about chemistry, how hard can it be to read one of these things? It took four to convince us, and it didn't feel real.

We called the hospital to get some kind of professional involved. Shouldn't someone more qualified make a pronouncement on this? It doesn't feel real! The receptionist at the OB/GYN was the first person we broke the news to.

"Hi, I took a pregnancy test and I think I'm pregnant."

"Okay, can you come to a group appointment on Monday for new parents-to-be?" The receptionist was not particularly surprised. For her, it did feel real--and not especially impressive.

The appointment with the midwife was professional and very straightforward. Don't eat this or this, eat a lot of these things, here's some ways to handle nausea, and talk to Amy about scheduling an ultrasound. In a month. The test was almost a formality, and was probably pretty similar to the ones from the drugstore. Also positive. Still didn't make me feel much like a parent.

Our announcement to our parents.
But it did make me start feeling like the arc of our lives is changing. There has been a plan, and a trend, but this has really clarified it. These future needs that you've been musing about how to meet? Now they're pressing needs, and there's no more time for musing. The process of finding a way to have a stable, predictable life within a reasonable radius of family has become the absolute priority. Where I once thought in terms of "finding enough to get by and not accumulating debt, and if weird things happen then that's an adventure," that way of thinking has been completely replaced by "what are the needs of someone who's brand new to the entire world, and what am I going to do to make it work out for them?" There's really no other path. In that way, it did start to feel real after that appointment, and I spent some time acting more stressed out than was necessary.[1]

Darnell, in the meantime, felt no symptoms, no nausea, as early days rolled by and all the guidelines said she should be. "I don't feel any different at all. I would be reassured if I could only be nauseous. I wish I had some morning sickness or something. It just doesn't feel real." She would come to regret that wish; we're thirteen weeks in and she's been continually nauseous and tired since about week six. At least it served to reassure her (and, to some extent, me) that yes, there truly was something going on in there. On that front, we've had enough reassurance--we're both ready for Darnell to stop constantly feeling awful. (In a way, this is the first thing the baby has done. Way to lower expectations, baby. Hyper-alertness, effortless muscle gain, or savant math abilities might have been nice.)

We got the first ultrasound on March 22. Pretty impressive to learn what was growing unseen. It didn't really look like a baby, but it did look how it was supposed to. (It doesn't really feel like a baby, either, but I think it does feel how it's supposed to.) Body, head, spine, four limbs. Darnell was suffering through week eight, with her eyes set on the second trimester. At the ultrasound, they pushed the due date back a week, and she had to start week eight all over again.

We told our parents the news shortly after that ultrasound (about a month ago), and aside from the excitement then, things have been pretty quiet. This business of "feeling real" is turning out to be pretty complicated, and it's shifting all over the place. I've seen parenthood as a rigidly binary situation: parents are like this, non-parents are like that. But of course that's wrong. Everything happens gradually, and by and large you're the same person you were yesterday. We'll see where things stand after a whole bunch of tomorrows.

Oh, and here's the announcement again since I think it's so great. All creative credit goes to Darnell.

Oh, and it's moving to get so much support from so many people. I'm humbled whenever I'm reminded of just how many great friends surround us. If you're reading this, I'm probably talking to you. Thanks for being part of our lives.

[1]: “Until a man is twenty-five, he still thinks, every so often, that under the right circumstances he could be the baddest motherfucker in the world. If I moved to a martial-arts monastery in China and studied real hard for ten years. If my family was wiped out by Colombian drug dealers and I swore myself to revenge. If I got a fatal disease, had one year to live, and devoted it to wiping out street crime. If I just dropped out and devoted my life to being bad.”
--Neal Stephenson, Snow Crash

I read this book when I was about 18, and saw myself in this passage. Nearly a year ago, I turned 26, so I'm right on schedule. I've often wondered just how much change is possible in a person's life from a certain point. Finding a friend and partner who you can't do without is one way for things to be more predictable. Taking on responsibility for a brand new person also changes the game: things will really never be the same.

Big Island Trip 2013

I know that I never posted the results of our No Spend January, but we have more important things to write about at the moment! We just got back from a 5 night trip over on the Big Island. We left Tegan with a friend and headed out on our adventure last Friday morning. We started the trip with a 4:30 am bus ride to the airport, hopped on a 7:50 am flight, and we were in Kailua-Kona by 8:30 am! We grabbed our rental car and started on a 100 mile journey to Volcanoes National Park.
We stopped for a quick picture by the side of the road.

This is Halema'uma'u Crater. It's been erupting since 2008. Unfortunately, we weren't able to visit at night to see the glowing red lava.

This crater is Kilauea Crater, which is no longer erupting. You can actually hike across the crater but we didn't have time on this trip.

Friday evening we headed into Hilo on the east side of Hawaii. We had dinner at an awesome place called Hilo Bay Cafe and checked into our super corny Uncle Billy's Hilo Bay Hotel. We kept our lanai door open so we could sleep with a frog and bird soundtrack.
View from Uncle Billy's.

Saturday morning we went for a run around Hilo Bay and packed up the car for another long drive up the east coast of Hawaii. Our stops included waterfalls, beautiful valleys, tasty organic smoothies and gorgeous ranch land.
 Rainbow Falls
Boiling Pots with Pe'epe'e Falls in the background.
Akaka Falls, a 422 foot waterfall. Here, we learned about a goby that climbs up the entire falls!

Saturday evening we headed up to the visitor's center on Mauna Kea. This center is known as one of the best places in the world for stargazing. We were lucky since it was a new moon on this night, and people were coming from all over to view the night sky. Mauna Kea is the tallest peak in Hawaii and the tallest mountain in the world! Oh yeah well about 20,000 feet of it is under water!
Our view from above the clouds.

We spent a lazy day on Sunday just hanging by the pool. We stayed at the Hilton Waikoloa Village.  This place is so big there is a monorail that takes you to your room! The weather was amazing, although the pools were freezing!

On Monday morning we did a short hike to see some ancient petro-glyphs and then headed south into Kona Town. In Kona we found some fresh poke and then checked into the Royal Kona and got an oceanfront room! We grabbed a quick Mai Tai at Don the Beachcomber and drove to the harbor for our manta ray snorkel.
Tuesday morning we had an early start and we fueled ourselves with the tastiest acai bowls from BASIK acai. We did 2 dives off the Kona coast. Our first dive was at a spot called Pyramid Pinnacle due to the large volcanic pyramids formed underwater. Our second dive was called Suck 'Em Ups. Earlier in the day we saw whales and during the dive I could actually hear the whales! Don't tell anybody I was holding my breath to hear them!

Of course our trip wouldn't be complete without a trip to Kona Brewing...that place was packed!

The trip overall was amazing! There is so much more to Hawaii then we would ever imagined. We already have a whole other trip planned for all the things we missed out on during this trip. I hope you guys like all the pictures. We also took some video of the mantas and our dives so look out for some of that footage soon.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Less Spend January: Week 3

So this is probably going to be a short post since not much exciting happened this week. We have totally stuck to our guns with the "no eating out" aspect of our challenge. The other part of our challenge was to only spend $200 this month on groceries. Well, I have already failed miserably. I believe we have already spent about $240 and we are only in Week 3. In my credit, we have had every single meal at home, not counting the free food I get at work. Also, I baked some yummy treats for people and that required extra baking goods. Normally our grocery budget is about $350, so I might be able to beat that!

Friday night was spent putting together a package for a friend which included baking and crafting. We also had a delicious salad with spinach, tomatoes, goat cheese, avocado and crushed pistachios. So good! Also, for those of you who don't know, yesterday was Tegan's 2nd birthday! We had a little Skype party with my parents' dogs and whipped cream was involved. The "party" itself was chaos so no pictures were taken, but here's a picture from last year's party.  We know that we are dorks for having a dog birthday party, but we are ok with that! We can already tell that our kids are going to be spoiled!
This morning we headed out to Manana Ridge Trail. We had already done part of this trail on the way to "Heart Attack Hill" on a previous hike, but this time we continued along the ridge-line instead of going down into the valley. It was a beautiful day here in Hawaii!
Tonight we plan on booking everything for our Big Island trip that we are taking next month. We are going to be spending 4 or 5 nights there. We will fill you all in later on the details, but if anybody has any suggestions of what to do there let us know! We will be there Feb 8-12/13.

Aloha

Less Spend January: Week 2

Well we have made it 11 days into our "Less Spend" month and I am already feeling a little anxious about making it to the end, even though our lives really haven't changed that much. Isn't that strange? I keep thinking of all these things I "need" to buy and making a list for next month. Maybe by the end of the month I can cross some of that stuff off the list.

We pretty much followed our plan for last weekend. Did dinners at home and a Spa Day on Saturday. I even let Alex cut my hair and it looks great! I convinced Alex to do this awesome cinnamon, lemon and honey facial and I did this hair mask using mayo, yogurt and egg white. This was all done using stuff from our kitchen! We felt really good after and had more dinner salads, which we are loving by the way! Alex finally finished reading Game of Thrones so we started in on watching the first season.

*Alex doesn't know that I am posting this pic of us in our facials*

On Friday I once again compiled a list of recipes for the week. These include: making turkey soup from our leftover turkey, rice/beans/onions and pineapple (one of my favs), turkey sandwiches for Alex's lunch, and I will be making some whole wheat zucchini bread for dessert!

*Yummy zucchini bread made from scratch using vanilla yogurt*

We started our Friday night with a nice sunset run around the neighborhood, followed by dinner and movies at home. We tapped into Netflix again for "Heathers" and "Adventureland." "Heathers" got good reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and we just love "Adventureland"...Alex has a thing for Kristen Stewart. :) Today (Saturday) we slept in and then headed into town to meet up with some friends and their adorable new baby at the Honolulu Zoo. We all have passes so this was also free. We ended the evening with a trip to the beach with the Tegs. On the agenda tonight: dinner, maybe a movie, homemade pretzels, and some crafting for a friend's present.

We hope you guys all had a great week and we hope this coming week is even better!

Less Spend January: Week 1

Surprisingly, Alex and I have had a good year financially.  We both worked a lot and saved a lot and we able to pay off the majority of our debts, all we have left is 1 of our cars. Alex would attribute most of this new found financial success on this guy...Mr. Money Mustache . We have been able to set up a little nest egg for ourselves and it feels amazing. We decided not to get any presents this year for Christmas and it has definitely helped jump start our year. I recently read on another blog about a "No Spend January." Basically you try and not do any spending other than what is necessary. For us, this means cutting out all eating out, entertainment out, and any clothes shopping. Using our normal budget, we should be able to save over $500 this month! I am also trying to reduce our grocery budget by $150, so we might be able to save about $650! We have already composed a list of free things to do on the weekends and I took inventory of all the food we have in the house. I am not sure how many of you will find this interesting, but hopefully we can inspire you guys to try the same thing! Also, writing all this out helps me get it all straight.

Week 1:
-Took inventory of all the food we had at home and came up with about 15 meals we can make.
-Made a list of free things to do on the weekends.
-Went shopping @ Safeway and spent about $59 for the week.
-Meals for the week are turkey/veggies/potatoes (we got the turkey for free @ Thanksgiving and froze it!), turkey sandwiches (Alex makes amazing homemade bread), rice/beans/onions, oatmeal, yogurt, and homemade cookies.
-For our first "date night" we made salads and homemade wheat thins  and watched Netflix movies (Thanks Mom and Dad for your password!).
- Tried going for a hike on Saturday but got rained out so we did a Zombie Fit  workout in our neighborhood and are going to do a "Spa Night" at home with haircuts, facials and hopefully massages! Maybe we can find an interesting documentary on Netflix as well.

We will need to get creative the rest of the month but we are looking forward to it. I hope to post each week.
